Swirl Culture

The fro yo wars have officially hit the streets of San Francisco! The Pinkberry phenomenon, dubbed "crackberry" by heavy users, has spawned the opening of fro yo joints throughout the city (and the nation at large). Yelpers are falling prey to the craze, looking for a fresh and healthy alternative to curb their sundae-lovin' ways.

For those who like "freestyle swirling," and by that we mean self-service, Icebee is currently the clear choice. Stephanie P is a believer in paying by the pound and loading on the toppings, and is relieved she's found a spot where "filling up means never having to panic in line when trying to decide on a mere 3-topping dessert." Still, self-proclaimed "fro-yo girl" Lolia S swears that Tuttimelon has the best toppings in town, with "chestnuts, red beans, fresh fruit and some of the softest and chewiest mochi balls in the city." Take no prisoners!

For those new to ice cold delight, the frozen yogurt of late is not the sweet TCBY from the '80s. The servings at Jubili taste like real yogurt and have pro-biotics, but not to worry -- Lynn G reports they do have Cap'n Crunch and Lucky Charms as toppings, lest you need that sugary fix. Matt G has found his own personal trifecta at SoGreen in the form of tangy green tea-flavored yogurt, fresh mangoes and waffle crisps. And it was love-at-first-bite for Mimi L at YoCup, where the staff are young and cute, the music is Justin Timberlake and the fro yo is that perfect blend of tart and sweet.

The competition is fierce enough that some places are looking for that unique twist, literally and figuratively speaking. Heather C loves Canadian-bred Yogen Fruz, where her own personal choice of fresh or frozen fruit can be magically blended into the yogurt itself. Cafe Ambrosia's yogurt is so ice-creamy sweet Jill K is considering sending it to a lab to make sure it's fat-free. Meanwhile, Kathleen N's wildest frozen yogurt dreams came true at Yogurt Bar, where a melange of tart yogurts with exotic toppings are always tempting you on the menu.

Whether it's McCain or Obama, once thing is certain: the Fro Yo Wars are only just getting started..! Have a revolutionary Fourth of July weekend!

Join the thousands of film lovers who pack the Castro Theatre each July to celebrate one of the most exciting periods in movie history. With inspired programming, beautiful 35mm prints and vibrant live music, the Silent Film Festival is a priceless time capsule and a weekend full of movie magic. The Man Who Laughs and The Unknown (with Guy Maddin in person) are this year's Saturday centerpieces, but all 12 programs will prove what longtime fans say: you haven’t seen a silent movie ‘til you’ve seen it at “The Silent.”

Juliane N. on Ryno's
"Ryno's was our second stop for the East Bay fro-yo tour. The place was small and looked really not hip or trendy like most shops now a days.  There was not even one chair where we can sit and eat but the girls behind the counter said they're not allowed to put chairs out until 8pm.

This was probably…"

Quinn S. on Working Girls' Cafe
"Working Girls is my morning stop when I am running a little early, and on the occasion that I need a little mid-afternoon sun and fro-yo.

Max and the rest of the staff are very friendly and they have paid enough attention to start anticipating my order, which is nice.  They go the extra step, like…"

Angie R. on Penguino's Gourmet Yogurt
"My friend Scott and I stopped here to cram some dessert into our ridiculously full stomachs after a rainy day lunch of noodle soup at Long Life Noodle Company at the Metreon.

The guy behind the counter was quite conscientious- he seemed very sad when we declined toppings on our yogurt and decorated…"
