I am not sure if all these venues yet realize what people are Yelping about them, but it just occurred to me that if they did, Yelp might lead to better customer service?  Then I thought, what if, when you sit down for a dinner or whatever, you say to the waiter, "By the way, I'm a Yelper..." and that somehow translated into a %10 discount or some sort of special treatment?  That would kick ass...

What do you think?  Maybe Yelp is already working this angle...

Well, bribe or no bribe, I still am honest in my reviews.  I mean, Yelp isn't paying me anything.  But a store discount would be nice if it motivates me to write a more meaningful review.

On a similar note, there's a website called tripadvisor.com where you rate travel-related places like hotels, destinations, etc.  I have read on there that some hotels will tell you to give them a good rating on tripadvisor.  But let me tell ya, people on there are brutally honest about the reviews, whether or not they get the freebie or not.  I'm of the thinking that yelpers are the same way, which is why I joined in!

Eventually everyone might yelp just to get a discount.  What's most interesting to me is that yelp and increased fluidity of information (available via the internet more generally) over time should theoretically lead to better quality food and service and perhaps more competitive prices at all businesses.  Once all businesses and wait staff realize the importance of fully pleasing every customer (potential yelper) they'll naturally be driven to further exceed every customer's expectations just in case they yelp.  Conceptually this makes me happy that in the future we'll have even more choices for really good food!  Gotta love capitalism, competition and the power of freedom of information sharing.  yelp on!
