Where is the best place in Austin for Southern comfort food? Preferably in South Austin.

Allison B. says:
I've heard Tony's Southern Comfort is really good...East 6th, close to I-35.

Threadgills! The original on N. Lamar.
Or 290 Cafe in Manor.

Hoover's, hands down

Threadgill's is not good. I'd also avoid places like Moonshine which claim to serve fancy comfort food. Hoover's is worth a try.

Will not be disapointed with Hoover's

Hoovers.
Heard about Tony's too but have yet to try it. They won a ton of awards though in a recent Texas Monthly southern food issue.

Hoovers! Many do love Threadgills...I think it is okay. I did love Moonshine though. You just have to be willing to pay the price. They won me over with the corndog shrimp.

I don't get the Threadgills love. Maybe I just like a lot of salt and pepper and butter in my southern food, but theirs tastes too bland to me. I do like their casseroles though.

You'd be hard up to find a place other than the East side, but they are out there. Try Nubian Queen Lola's on E. 11th & Chicon. Don't be scared because it's in front of the pj's. Also, the other place on 11th (by the longbranch Inn), Gene's poboy

Carrie "Carrie C." C. says:
Gene's is more like gumbos and poboys and seafood rather than southern comfort food though, right? Do they even serve veggies?

Steve C. says:
I was never that impressed with Hoovers except for bbq. We would often drive to Cafe 290 in Manor.

Joe H. says:
Gene's is primarily known for their poboys (which is as comfort as it gets, IMHO), but they also feature one or two specials every day like spaghetti bake, chicken and dumplings, or the stupendous smothered porkchops. Great sweet tea. i recommend it, but not QUITE as much as Tony's.
